Putting together an inventory of Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) and Cognitive Demands Analysis (CDA), or as we like to call it a Job Demands Analysis (JDA) takes time and financial investment, so what is a JDA and how will your company benefit from it?
Simply put, JDAs clarify the essential job task requirements and support early intervention, assist with case management, and your organization's remain-at-work/return-to-work program.
The JDA is used by the Human Resources Department for inclusion in the job description to help with the recruitment process. The JDA is also required by the Occupational Health & Safety team in the administration of Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), Short-term Disability (STD) or Long-term Disability (LTD) claims, to educate treating healthcare practitioners, and to assess worker fitness for a position and/or workplace accommodation.
Ahead of setting return-to-work and recovery goals, the JDA allows the worker, employer, WSIB case manager or disability insurance case manager (STD or LTD), claims specialist, and treating health professional to fully understand the physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and sensory demands of the job, as well as the work environment, equipment, and tools, in order to help:
- Identify barriers to resuming work following an injury or illness,
- Determine the necessary interventions for a successful return with positive outcomes, and
- Develop a realistic plan for return to the pre-injury role - with or without accommodations.
Our objective is to offer comprehensive JDA assessments and reader-friendly reports tailored to your organization's Occupational Health and Safety objectives, as well as return-to-work/ stay-at-work and ergonomics initiatives.

Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) is a detailed jobsite assessment of the workplace that specifically identifies a particular job's physical demands and ergonomic risk factors.
Cognitive Demands Analysis (CDA) is an in-depth assessment of the cognitive, sensory, psychosocial and behavioural demands of a job.
The combination of the analysis of the physical and cognitive demands is the Job Demands Analysis (JDA), or sometimes also referred to as a Job Site Analysis, Job Site Assessment, Workplace or Worksite Assessment.
Our Job Match Assessment is used for return to work. It compares an employee's documented functional abilities (as per the employee's WSIB Functional Abilities Form (FAF), Functional Abilities Evaluation (FAE) or other current medical restrictions information) to the physical and/or cognitive requirements of a specific job/task as outlined in a Physical/Job Demands Analysis (PDA/JDA) or a WSIB Physical Demands Information Form (PDIF). Accommodation is recommended where possible and practical.
Our occupational therapists are trained and experienced in Office Ergonomic Assessments addressing office workstation set-up, provide education and recommend modifications to minimize discomfort and the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and increase productivity.
Our qualitative Ergonomic Risk Assessments in industrial or manufacturing settings use standardized assessments and measurement tools to address postural demands, workstation and tool design that may increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).
Our onsite Workplace Assessments (PDA, CDA, JDA, Office Ergonomic Assessments, Job Match Assessments) identify risks for injury prevention.
To design effective rehabilitation programs that get your patients back to work, you require a clear understanding of the physical and cognitive job demands.
To successfully accommodate workers with medical restrictions, you require a clear understanding of the physical and cognitive job demands.
